The UNM Service Corps model redefines the notion that learning has to solely take place in the classroom, rather it embraces that knowledge is deeply rooted in our local communities. We approach “communities as text” and where learning should take place.  In practicing this model, we are also able to formulate a different type of leadership practice among our youth, one that promotes advocacy, community learning, & problem solving.   It encourages young people to fully engage in civic education and develop skills that will enable them to participate fully in society at a local, national, international level.

The Nepal Study Center promotes global connectivity through intellectual collaboration, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer.  NSC believes in local empowerment through technology and it has led to the development of a concept called "Smart Villiage, Smart Design."
Fighting poverty with technology and innovative ideas is the essence of this model.  The introduction of Information Technology to a remote village promotes e-learning, facilitates tele-health, and provides opportunities for e-microfinance.  The success of this holistic approach requires an emphasis on local ownership.
